Ever since we discovered Opentape my musical friends have been asking for help getting it installed in their sites and I have finally bumped one up to the server for myself, since it is getting installed all over our domains.

It all started when Kirk asked me to toss a web site together for him because he was close to finishing up a recording project and releasing a CD of praise and worship songs he wrote in 1985, along with some singles in assorted genres that he and his brothers had written. He wanted to be able to offer folks a chance to hear his music in a stream without the option of downloading it so they could hear the whole song instead of the traditional 30 to 45 second preview clip.

Gary and Sonny Larson asked What I could do to help them get Sonny's songs out there where people could hear their songs and download mp3s.

Opentape worked well in both applications because it allows for toggling downloadability on and off.

We set up a site for Gary based around an Opentape playlist that was toggled for allowing the songs to be downloaded, while Kirk's was toggled off.

While most people use Opentape around the idea of a mixtape, it has a lot of neat uses for serving up audio besides making mixtapes. Musicians are using it as a marketing and distribution tool to share their sounds, and podcasters their pods.

My playlist is mostly audiobooks and re-broadcasts. I can listen to audiobooks from any computer as I work on different machines, or from the cybercafe, or anywhere with access, and don't have to carry them around on a USB stick in order to have them handy.

Sam is using his playlist for his poetry. Here's the embed code for his playlist:
<object width="300" height="160">

<param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" />
<param name="movie"
value="http://gorgelink.org/vaknin/spoken/res/jw_player.swf?playlist=bottom&displayheight=0&thumbsinplaylist=false&file=http://gorgelink.org/vaknin/spoken/code/xspf.php"
/>
<embed
src="http://gorgelink.org/vaknin/spoken/res/jw_player.swf?playlist=bottom&displayheight=0&thumbsinplaylist=false&file=http://gorgelink.org/vaknin/spoken/code/xspf.php"
type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true"
allowscriptaccess="always" width="300" height="160"></embed>
</object>

Anyone can copy the code and embed Sam's playlist on their web page, giving him a promotional tool in a link back that provides content to the person embedding Sam's poems on their site.

Here's Kirk's embed code from his home site:
<object width="300" height="160">

<param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" />
<param name="movie" value="http://kirkphilipsen.com/playlist/res/jw_player.swf?playlist=bottom&displayheight=0&thumbsinplaylist=false&file=http://kirkphilipsen.com/playlist/code/xspf.php" />
<embed src="http://kirkphilipsen.com/playlist/res/jw_player.swf?playlist=bottom&displayheight=0&thumbsinplaylist=false&file=http://kirkphilipsen.com/playlist/code/xspf.php" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" width="300" height="160"></embed>
</object>

And here is the one just for his first CD:
<object width="300" height="160">

<param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" />
<param name="movie" value="http://www.blustreetsrecords.com/releases/cd1/res/jw_player.swf?playlist=bottom&displayheight=0&thumbsinplaylist=false&file=http://www.blustreetsrecords.com/releases/cd1/code/xspf.php" />
<embed src="http://www.blustreetsrecords.com/releases/cd1/res/jw_player.swf?playlist=bottom&displayheight=0&thumbsinplaylist=false&file=http://www.blustreetsrecords.com/releases/cd1/code/xspf.php" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" width="300" height="160"></embed>
</object>

Here's the embed code for the GorgeLink.Org audiocast:
<object width="300" height="160">

<param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" />
<param name="movie" value="http://gorgelink.org/audiocast/res/jw_player.swf?playlist=bottom&displayheight=0&thumbsinplaylist=false&file=http://gorgelink.org/audiocast/code/xspf.php" />
<embed src="http://gorgelink.org/audiocast/res/jw_player.swf?playlist=bottom&displayheight=0&thumbsinplaylist=false&file=http://gorgelink.org/audiocast/code/xspf.php" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" width="300" height="160"></embed>
</object>

And here's the code for Eliza's playlist for her album I Could Be Anybody:
<object width="300" height="160">

<param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" />
<param name="movie" value="http://gorgelink.org/eliza/res/jw_player.swf?playlist=bottom&displayheight=0&thumbsinplaylist=false&file=http://gorgelink.org/eliza/code/xspf.php" />
<embed src="http://gorgelink.org/eliza/res/jw_player.swf?playlist=bottom&displayheight=0&thumbsinplaylist=false&file=http://gorgelink.org/eliza/code/xspf.php" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" width="300" height="160"></embed>
</object>

I'll be adding more embed codes here as soon as I get them and re-post them at the Ekone Creative blog. Links to our lists can be found at the playlists post at GorgeLink. So have fun exploring the sonics and come back here for the codes for the ones you like best when you want to share them.
